HONOLULU — Honolulu authorities say an 81-year-old Wahiawa man died after being struck by a van as he walked.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser newspaper reports the man was taken to a hospital and died late Sunday afternoon.

Police say a Nissan van driven by a 24-year-old man was heading east on California Avenue in Wahiawa when it veered off the road and struck a car shortly before 1:30 p.m. Sunday.

Police say the van also struck a traffic sign, hit the man on the sidewalk and went through the window of a shoe store.

Honolulu fire Capt. David Jenkins says the driver of the van lost control of the vehicle after suffering a “medical episode.”

The drivers of the two vehicles were not hurt.
